Sweat dripped down Hannah’s forehead as she beat at Jessica’s gloved fists. Each blow knocked Jessica back until she was pressed against the wall. As much as she cared about Jessica, Hannah felt good knowing that she could hold her own against a muscled ex-soldier. If she could knock back someone as strong as Jessica, she could take on anyone. Turns out the gym facilities of Jessica’s security firm had helped her much more than the therapist.

“How do you feel?” Jessica asked, grabbing a water bottle and holding it out to Hannah.

“Better than I have in a long time.”

“You just forgot how powerful you are.” The way Jessica said that sent a shiver down Hannah's spine, and she could tell Jessica really believed it. She didn't think Hannah was weak. She didn't think Hannah was broken. The look in her eyes said she thought Hannah could take on the world.

“Thank you for reminding me.” Hannah chewed her lip, imagining what it would be like to press up against Jessica's firm body.

“I’m not quite done.” Jessica held out her hand. “I want to show you one more thing.”

She led Hannah from the gym to a long room with targets at one end that Hannah quickly recognized as a small shooting range. Jessica handed her some earmuffs and goggles.

“Jessica, I don’t think—”

“I just want you to feel the gun in your hands,” Jessica said, already retrieving a handgun from a locked safe. “You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with.”

Hannah wasn’t sure she was comfortable with the idea, but the surge of adrenaline from boxing with Jessica was still coursing through her veins, and her hair stood on end when she took the cold metal from Jessica’s hands.

“Won’t it hurt the baby’s ears?” Hannah pressed a hand to her belly.

“It’s got a silencer on it,” Jessica said. She helped guide Hannah into position until her gaze followed the barrel of the gun to the center of a target across the room. Hannah took a deep breath, feeling the cold of the trigger against her finger. Could she really defend herself if the man she was hiding from came for her again? Her heart raced at the thought of him returning and it was a struggle to draw breath, but instead of panicking she squeezed the trigger.

Even with a silencer on, the gunshot rang off the walls of the shooting range, each echo sending a surge of power through her. Hannah had never pictured herself holding a gun, but soon the paper target was full of holes, several of them dead center.

“Remind me to never get on your bad side.” Jessica whistled. She took the target down and handed it to Hannah. “Here. Keep this. Look at it any time you feel helpless again.”

Hannah tucked the paper into her pocket.

As Jessica lead the way to the showers, Hannah couldn’t stop looking at the way her work out clothes hugged her body. Her military background was obvious in her toned muscles, but there was a softness to her curves too.
